ASAP’s goal is to have 1-4 people testifying at each of the video hearing locations to reiterate the message that we need $30million new dollars in the DSHS budget to enhance and expand prevention and treatment services for Texas families.

Our chances of receiving increases in the budget are extremely encouraging this year, but the biggest hurdle to be crossed is NOW….. We need to convince DSHS to include substance abuse service increases as a priority exceptional item in their Legislative Appropriations Request. Without a requested increase from DSHS, it will be extremely difficult to advocate for increased dollars during the session if the agency hasn’t requested them.

Because significant travel is not involved, this is an excellent time to coordinate with board members, judges or public safety officers, recovering persons, family members, physicians and community leaders to attend and provide testimony at the video conference. Ask them to deliver the Association’s request for a $30million increase (see attached).

It will be personal community perspectives, medical expertise and local stories that will resonate the best. Just be sure all testimony ultimately includes the $30M funding increase (exceptional item) as the main point.

Below is the list of cities with a video conference connection. Find the one closest to you and begin contacting people who are willing to testify. We will keep you informed about the exact locations once they are posted.

The May 2 meeting will be held from 3-6 p.m. Central Daylight Time in the DSHS boardroom located in the Moreton building at 1100 W. 49th Street in Austin .
